Five Colorado Ice Players Selected to UIF All-Star Team

June 3, 2008

Fort Collins, Colo. -

The Colorado Ice professional indoor football team (4-8) will have five players representing the team at the United Indoor Football league’s All-Star game on July 19th at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.  Brandon Alconcel (offensive line), Steve Frye (defensive line), Travis Garcia (defensive back), Dorsey Golston (defensive back) and Ryan Palmer (special teams specialist) were selected by the league coaches and general managers as well as newspaper beat writers and radio announcers from each team.

This is Alconcel’s first nod as an All-Star selection, but second year playing for the Ice.  He played 14 games on the line during Colorado’s inaugural season and has played all 12 so far this year, notching one solo tackle.  Alconcel played four years for Colorado State University before joining the Ice.

Frye appears on the 25-man Western Conference roster for the second year in a row.  He played 15 games for the Ice last year and 11 this year.  He was named honorable mention Defensive Player of the Week for week one in 2007 after posting a game-high eight tackles against Billings on March 23.  He led the team with 15 TFL for 65 yards and seven sacks for 43 yards in 2007.  Frye currently ranks seventh on the team with 24.5 total tackles (15 solo, 19 assisted).  He has eight TFL for 40 yards, four of those sacks for 28 yards (good for eighth in the league).  Frye has also tallied two interceptions, a pass breakup, a QB hurry and a blocked kick this season.  He previously played for the University of Northern Colorado and is a Loveland High School graduate.

A Colorado State alum, Garcia will make his second appearance at the UIF All-Star game.  He played 15 games for the Ice last year and was second on the team with 75 total tackles (51 solo, 48 assisted).  He had four TFL for 19 yards and one sack for 14 yards.  He led the team with 13 pass breakups and six interceptions for 96 yards and two scores which also ranked fourth in the league.  Garcia has played ten games for the Ice this year, recording 44.5 total tackles (29 solo, 31 assisted) with 3.5 TFL for eight yards.  He has tallied two picks for seven yards, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries for 41 yards (good for fourth in the league), one for a score, and a forced fumble.

Golston has played all 12 games for the Ice this season after signing mid-season and playing five games last year, totaling 35.5 tackles (29 solo, 13 assisted).  He has tallied 62.5 total tackles (50 solo, 25 assisted) so far this season with three TFL for 12 yards to rank second on the team and tie for ninth in the league.  He has two interceptions for 37 yards (one for a score), 10 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one recovery.  Golston was an All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention selection for the University of Wyoming and originally comes from Kansas City, Mo.

The UIF’s 2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Ryan Palmer, has been selected to the All-Star team for the second straight year after leading the Ice in tackles for an additional season.  Palmer played every game for the Ice and was credited with 93 total tackles (68 solo, 50 assisted) in 2007 to put him fifth in the league.  He has started every game this season and leads the team with 75 total tackles (48 solo, 54 assisted), good for third in the league, and 13.5 TFL for 31 yards ranks him third in the league.  He has tallied 2.5 sacks for nine yards, two pass breakups, two QB hurries, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries with a score to lead the league this season.

The Ice will close the season with two regular season games at home; June 6 at 7:30 p.m. against the Sioux Falls Storm for Hometown Heroes Night and June 13 at 7:30 p.m. against the Wichita Wild for Fan Appreciation Night.  In light of the recent tornado destruction, the Ice organization would like to offer an opportunity for Windsor residents to relax and enjoy themselves for an evening.  All Windsor residents who show a valid ID with residency will receive free admission into the indoor football game at the Budweiser Events Center on June 6 when Colorado hosts the three-time defending United Bowl champion Sioux Falls Storm at 7:30 p.m.
