Five Colorado Ice Players Headed to All Star Game

Fort Collins, Colo. – The Colorado Ice professional indoor football team will send five players to the United Indoor Football league’s All Star game this Saturday, July 19th at 7 p.m. CT/ 6 p.m. MT at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.  Brandon Alconcel (offensive line), Steve Frye (defensive line), Travis Garcia (defensive back), Dorsey Golston (defensive back) and Ryan Palmer (special teams specialist) were selected by the league coaches and general managers as well as newspaper beat writers and radio announcers from each team.

Billings’ Heron O’Neal will lead the West squad wearing white jerseys and Sioux City’s Jarrod DeGeorgia will coach the East suited in red.  Festivities will begin Friday, July 18, 2008, with the All Star Banquet at the Sioux City Convention Center.  Saturday at 2 p.m. will be the Guns and Hoses game with local police and fire departments facing off in a football game benefitting Make a Wish and Council on Sex Assault and Domestic Violence.  Game jerseys will also be auctioned off at the game.

This is Alconcel’s first nod as an All-Star selection, but second year playing for the Ice.  He played 14 games on the line during Colorado’s inaugural season and played in all 14 this year, notching 2 solo tackles.  Alconcel played four years for Colorado State University before joining the Ice. 

Frye appears on the 25-man Western Conference roster for the second year in a row.  He played 15 games for the Ice last year and 13 this year.  He was named honorable mention Defensive Player of the Week for week one in 2007 after posting a game-high eight tackles against Billings on March 23.  He led the team with 15 TFL for 65 yards and seven sacks for 43 yards in 2007.  Frye ranks sixth on the team with 34 total tackles (22 solo, 24 assisted).  He has 10.5 TFL for 47 yards, five of those sacks for 29 yards (good for seventh in the league).  Frye has also tallied two interceptions, a pass breakup, three QB hurries and a blocked kick this season.  He previously played for the University of Northern Colorado and is a Loveland High School graduate.

A Colorado State alum, Garcia will make his second appearance at the UIF All-Star game.  He played 15 games for the Ice last year and was second on the team with 75 total tackles (51 solo, 48 assisted).  He had four TFL for 19 yards and one sack for 14 yards.  He led the team with 13 pass breakups and six interceptions for 96 yards and two scores which also ranked fourth in the league.  Garcia has played 12 games for the Ice this year, recording 55.5 total tackles (35 solo, 41 assisted) with 3.5 TFL for eight yards.  He has tallied two picks for seven yards, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries for 41 yards (good for fourth in the league), one for a score, and a forced fumble.

Golston played in all 14 games for the Ice this season after signing mid-season and playing five games last year, totaling 35.5 tackles (29 solo, 13 assisted).  He has tallied 71 total tackles (56 solo, 30 assisted) so far this season with four TFL for 13 yards to rank second on the team and tie for ninth in the league.  He has two interceptions for 37 yards (one for a score), 11 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one recovery.  Golston was an All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention selection for the University of Wyoming and originally comes from Kansas City, Mo.

The UIF’s 2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Ryan Palmer, has been selected to the All-Star team for the second straight year after leading the Ice in tackles for an additional season.  Palmer played every game for the Ice and was credited with 93 total tackles (68 solo, 50 assisted) in 2007 to put him fifth in the league.  He has started every game this season and leads the team with 85 total tackles (55 solo, 60 assisted), good for third in the league, and 14.5 TFL for 32 yards ranks him fourth in the league.  He has tallied 2.5 sacks for nine yards, two pass breakups, three QB hurries, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries with a score to lead the league this season.
